This special story originated from a conversation with the skipper of the St Mawes Ferry known to everyone as Topper. For years two turnstones would fly onto his ferry each morning and return in the late afternoon. These true-life events inspired Helen Dunmore to weave a magical tale of family, longing, and adventure.

The Ferry Birds

Jago often visits his Grandmother on the other side of the river, taking the same ferry as the turnstones. He always wondered why they went back and forth every day. His mother whispered, “That’s their secret, and maybe one day they will tell you.”
