This special story originated from a conversation with the skipper of the St Mawes Ferry known to everyone as Topper. For years two turnstones would fly onto his ferry each morning and return in the late afternoon. These true-life events inspired Helen Dunmore to weave a magical tale of family, longing, and adventure.
