Mabecron book publishing grew from our experience as booksellers in the Devon and Cornwall areas. We recognised a need to create books which we felt did not already exist but which we had a market for. This realisation led to the formation of a publishing company with clear ideas and a strong identity within Cornwall.
Our Bookshops in Plymouth, St Ives and Falmouth complement our publishing ventures and it's in this seamless marriage that we find our creative sense of purpose. The bookshops provide local marketing and a shop window for our titles and our publishing activity provides the books our customers want and enjoy.
Our first title Cornwall (1998) was a photographic journey around Cornwall by photographer Richard Strong. It is now out of print but it gave us invaluable knowledge and experience to expand our company into the publishing world.
We now have seven Soggy Bear titles in print; a series for young children written by local hero Phil Moran and illustrated by the award winning Michael Foreman, this combination has truly captured the hearts of children and families who visit Cornwall. There are plans for a seventh title to be published in 2012.
Three titles The Ferry Birds, the Islanders and the Lonley sea Dragon, written by the Orange prize winning author Helen Dunmore and illustrated by the Carnegie medal long-listed Rebecca Cobb, are beautiful and sensitive picture books exploring childhood dreams and imagination.
Not to leave out Cornwall's vivid culinary heritage, our Pasties book written by Times columnist Lindsay Bareham is the definitive recipe book on this Cornish delicacy.
Each year we will add new and exciting titles, growing together alongside our experienced authors, illustrators and production team. Our wish is also to discover and nurture new talent along the way of publishing beautiful books that will be enjoyed and cherished in the hearts and minds of our readers.
