Philip is a retired Master Mariner who worked with the government and was the launching authority for the St Ives Lifeboat. He came to writing late in his life but his first book Soggy the Bear, published by Mabecron Books has been a tremendous success leading to the creation of a further five Soggy adventure books. His long-standing friendship with Michael Foreman has placed him firmly in the catalogue of children’s characters portrayed in many of Michael’s earlier books; Jacks Fantastic Voyage is actually about Philip’s house! This friendship has evolved into a professional collaboration as Phil’s words and experiences provide the real life basis for the Soggy’s adventures which Michael brings to visual life through his beautiful illustrations. Many of the important elements found in the Soggy adventures actually exist; the rescue chair, the house, Grandfather, the other creatures can all be seen on a visit to St Ives. Try shouting up ‘Grandfather’ to the window above the harbour pathway, it’s where the soft toys all sit looking out over the harbour.
